A New Floor

I love that God will use ANY and EVERY part of your life to speak His truths to you if you will just listen and make a conscious effort to seek Him and find Him in all you do.   As we worked that week, I decided that we should put down new flooring in the laundry room (the old flooring had been gouged by the washer). First thought was to just put the new flooring over the top of the old flooring, but I really didn’t want to do a halfway job for the future owners of the house. I thought to myself, “this will be an easy project. 1 – 1 1/2 days max. Go!”

Step one was to remove the old flooring (duh right). Seems simple enough… except that as I started to removed the flooring I realized the ENTIRE flooring wasn’t coming up all together. I was having to take small sections at a time and even within the sections, there was often backing from the old flooring  that stayed behind (it was glued very well evidently). Not only were parts of the back of the flooring not coming up, but the glue was still there too!!  “No worries” I thought. “I’ll  get that scrapper and spray some water on those yucky spots and it’ll come up no problem! I’ll start that first thing tomorrow morning. 1/2 day to take up the old floor and then a full day to scrape the floor and put the new flooring down. Still on schedule”.   Just in case you’re not sure… I was WAY WRONG!!  By the end of the next day I hadn’t even scratched the surface of getting the remaining pieces of the floor up. By this time I’m starting to think, “wow… maybe I really should’ve just put the new floor over the old one.  I really bit off more than I can chew with this.”

As my thoughts raced through my head, I heard that ever so gentle whisper… “this is what is like when you start to untangle all the beliefs in your heart.”  Oh how I LOVE when HE speaks to me… just the smallest set of words from HIM set me ablaze for more. My mind and attitude instantly changed. I was curious now.. What did that mean?  How does this relate in my life?  So many questions.. And guess what.. I was obviously going to have plenty of time to ask them and listen for an answer considering my severely underestimated project length. Over the next day, as I scraped the floor, God began to reveal many things to me.  Our lives are built on what we believe. In order to change what we believe, old beliefs must be removed from the very foundations of our lives. That is NO EASY TASK!!  To top it off, if you don’t have the right tools to do the job, you really won’t get any results.. You just end up putting a lot of muscle into scraping only to see that the old floor still isn’t coming up.  BUT!!  With the right tools, that old flooring started to come up quicker. And more completely. After ONLY ABOUT an HOUR of work the SECOND day, there was very little residue from the old floor left.

Then it was time to put the NEW flooring down… this is the part of the job I expected to spend the most time on.. Guess what… WRONG AGAIN!!  Turns out that laying new flooring wasn’t near as difficult as removing the old flooring. Now.. I’m not sure if this is true all the time in the flooring world, but in this particular case it was VERY true!!  And again, I heard that sweet whisper say, “That’s right baby girl. When there’s nothing else to interfere, believing Me is super easy.”  And it clicked… realizing that you have an incorrect belief is key to change. If you want foundations built on the solid rock, you can’t start on the sand and just add some rocks. Even rocks will start to sink if they’re laid in the sand. When the tide comes, they will sink or be washed away.. A firm foundation must START on a solid foundation.
